FEATURED VOLUNTEER
Joseph Brent Link & Buttons, A Veteran & his Best Friend
Oklahoma League for the Blind (OLB) is proud to spotlight volunteer Joseph Brent Link. Born in Centennial Hospital in Inglewood, California, Brent came to Oklahoma via Yell County, Arkansas. Brent served in the Marine Corps & the Navy, with a communications specialty in a SEAL team during Vietnam. His military career spanned 6 years. He is a 100% service connected disabled Veteran, having totally lost his deteriorating vision in the last few years.
After his military career Brent attended the University of Arkansas where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and minored in Accounting, made available through the GI Bill.
Determined not to let his loss of vision hold him back he contracted with a computer software company and opened his own business that developed adaptive technology for the blind and vision impaired. He retired in 2001. Brent works with many blind Veterans groups on the national level. He also works to educate people about blindness and search for opportunities available for the blind. Brent believes that disabilities should not keep a person down.
An avid golfer, Brent refused to let his vision loss deprive him of his love for golf. He is very active with the US Blind Golf Association. Competitive by nature, he loves being out on the golf course and proving that his blindness hasn't hurt his game. He and his service dog, Buttons, are constant travelers. Brent believes in OLB and its mission and volunteering for OLB gives him an opportunity to advocate for the blind and vision impaired.
