The Oklahoma League for the Blind recently received the 2008 Honorary ONE Awards Selection Commission Award for Self-Sufficiency from the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits. 

The inaugural ONE Awards dinner and ceremony was created and hosted by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits to honor and recognize outstanding Oklahoma nonprofits that are judged to be excellent in the way they pursue their mission, as well as to increase statewide awareness about the roles that nonprofits play in contributing to the quality of life and to Oklahoma’s economic development. 

There was no application process to be included for selection; each recognized nonprofit was personally nominated by one of the 9 selection commissioners.

Nonprofits were honored in 9 categories of service including:  Arts & Humanities, Community, Community Health Services, Education, Health Services, Self-Sufficiency, Seniors, Sports & Recreation, and Youth Development. 

Oklahoma League for the Blind was the winner in the Self-Sufficiency category, receiving $7500 and a crystal trophy.  The two finalists in that category were the Dale Rogers Training Center and the Regional Foodbank of Oklahoma.  Each of those finalists received $5000.

“Oklahoma League for the Blind is certainly a leader among Oklahoma nonprofits and is a glistening example of effectiveness and efficiency that has garnered respect throughout the state,” said Debby Hampton, CEO of the OK Center for Nonprofits.

“We are truly honored to receive this recognition,” said Lauren White, President and CEO of the Oklahoma League for the Blind.  “We are dedicated to fulfilling our mission each day by providing job opportunities, rehabilitation services, and community outreach programs for blind and visually impaired Oklahomans.  We hope that this award will help us to achieve our vision of expanding our capacity to empower all people with vision loss to re-gain their independence.”
