Community Outreach & Education
A lack of public awareness and understanding about blindness – and its impact on the lives of those learning to live with vision loss – is one of the biggest obstacles to independence for the people we serve.
We engage the public in a number of ways, and are always looking for new opportunities to provide education on the topic of blindness and help the people we serve become more actively involved in their communities.
Public Speaking - Our employees regularly speak to local businesses and organizations – who invite us to provide a glimpse of what it means to live with blindness or visual impairment – to share our mission and success stories and to offer options for those who want to get involved.
Recreation -- There is a lot of excitement in Oklahoma City about the increase in activity in and around the Oklahoma River. We have partnered with the Chesapeake Boathouse to help Oklahomans who are blind or visually impaired enjoy activities on the river by training Oklahoma’s first blind rowing team.
Braille - We help businesses and communities to make public spaces more accessible for the blind and visually impaired through in-house Braille production. We can incorporate Braille into existing business collateral materials (business cards, brochures, letterhead, etc.) and can also produce indoor and outdoor plaques and signs. The Oklahoma City Zoo has recently incorporated Braille into its customer experience.
Caregiver Support Groups - Blindness and vision loss can have a significant impact on relationships. For those who find themselves responsible for the care of someone who is blind or visually impaired, learning what to do and how to help can be a daunting task. Led by our team of vision rehabilitation specialists, we lead monthly support groups in an effort to provide useful information and help people build support systems.
"Envision Us" Tours - For those who learn best by experience, a good way to see our mission in action is to visit NewView headquarters on the second or fourth Thursday of every month at 10:30 a.m. for a free, one-hour tour of our facility. Call for a reservation.
Volunteer Opportunities - There are many opportunities throughout the year for people to get personally involved in improving the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired.
